From Drive, just lift the handle straight up and this will bypass the reverse lockout safety feature, then move the shift handle forward into Reverse or Park. Once out of Park, there's no need to lift the handle to shift gears until you either need to access Reverse or Park. To access Reverse or Forward gears when in Park you simply lift the handle and pull back and let the handle drop once in or past Reverse.
